Alternate name: Artemivs'k, Артемівськ [Ukr], Artëmovsk, Артёмовск / Бахмут  [Rus, since 1924], Bakhmut [Rus, before 1924], Bachmut [Yid, Pol], 48°35' N, 38°00' E. 41 miles NNE of Donetsk (Yuzovka, Stalino), 61 miles W of Luhansk (Voroshilovgrad). Ekaterinoslav 1900 Jewish population: 3,259. Słownik Geograficzny Królestwa Polskiego (1880-1902), I, pp. 76-77: "Bachmut". In 1924 the city's name was changed from Bachmut (the river on which it is located) to Artemivsk for Artem, a Russian revolutionary figure. Salt operations were revived in the 19th century.  This city in the Donetsk Oblast is the administrative center of the Artemivsky Raion on the Bachmutka River about 89 km away from the administrative center of Donetsk Oblast, Donetsk. The 2005 population is 80,655. Jewish history. [August 2009]
