SPISSKA BELA: Kežmarok District, Prešov Region in Spiš Print

Alternate names: Spišská Belá [Slov], Szepesbéla [Hun], Zipser Bela [Ger], Biała Spiska [Pol]. 49°11' N, 20°28' E, 38 miles WNW of Prešov (Eperjes), in Kežmarok District, Spiš Region, N Slovakia. Jewish population: 111 (in 1880),  7,475=4.3% (1910]185 (in 1919). The synagogue still stands.

CEMETERY:

  • Krátka (next to family house nr.22)   The remaining fragment of the 17 x52m cemetery is located in the SE outskirts of the town in an area of private residences. 7 upright and 5 toppled simple sandstone, granite, grey and white marble can gravestones with  Hebrew, Hungarian and German inscriptions are visible. A wire fence and on the street side by a low, pierced, concrete wall encloses the site accessible from the street by a low iron gate with the Star of David.  photo.  photos. [Sep 2014]

Spisska Bela is located in Poprad, N of Poprad. The flat urban isolated location has no sign or marker. Reached by turning directly off a public road, access is open to all with no wall or gate. 1-20 19th-20th century marble flat shaped tombstones with Hebrew and German inscriptions are in original locations. Adjacent properties are residential. Private visitors stop rarely. Security, pollution, and vandalism are very serious threats.
