Gmina Rejowiec is a rural administrative district in Chełm powiat, Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland with its seat in the village of Rejowiec, 17 km (11 mi) SW of Chełm and 52 km (32 mi) E of the regional capital Lublin. Formerly in Krasnystaw powiat abd transferred to Chełm powiat in 2006, the gmina 2006 total population was 6,695. Gmina Rejowiec contains the villages and settlements of Adamów, Aleksandria Krzywowolska, Aleksandria Niedziałowska, Bańkowszczyzna, Bieniów, Czechów Kąt, Elżbiecin, Hruszów, Kobyle, Leonów, Marynin, Marysin, Niedziałowice Drugie, Niedziałowice Pierwsze, Niemirów, Rejowiec, Rybie, Siedliszczki, Stary Majdan, Wereszcze Duże, Wereszcze Małe, Wólka Rejowiecka, Zagrody, Zawadówka and Zyngierówka. The Jews settled here in the 16th century and for many years were the majority of the population reaching 80% in the early 20th century. CEMETERY:The Nazis devastated the Jewish cemetery located at ul. Kościuszki and the destruction continued after liberation. Not until several years ago did Jews originally from Rejowca reorganize the area and erect a small memorial monument; not one matzevot survived the war.
