43° 40′ 00″ N 06° 55′ 00″ E. Written Grassa or Grasso in the local dialects, this French village's inhabitants are called Grassois. Known as the worldwide capital of perfume, the capital of oriental Provence, Grasse has two flowers images. Designated a City of Art and History and also an Internet City, this is the fourth city of Alpes-Maritimes in term of population with 49,100 inhabitants in 2005. Grasse has had a prospering perfume industry since the end of the 18th century. Grasse, the center of the French today's perfume industry, is known as the world's perfume capital. It produces over two-thirds of France's natural aromas (for perfume and for food flavorings). This industry turns over more than 600 million Euros a year. Grasse's particular microclimate encouraged the flower farming industry. It is warm and far enough inland to be sheltered from the sea air. There is an abundance of water, thanks to its situation in the hills and the 1860 construction of the Siagne canal for irrigation purposes. The town is 350 meters above sea level and 20 km from the Coast (Côte d'Azur).
Jasmine, a key ingredient of many perfumes, was brought to southern France by the Moors in the 16th century. Twenty-seven tons of jasmine are now harvested in Grasse every year. There are numerous 'perfumeries' in Grasse such as (Fragonard, Galimard) each with tours and a museum. http://www.ville-grasse.fr/ is the town's web site. [January 2008]
