This town in Languedoc in SW France has a population of 69,000 and is a commune and a sous-préfecture in Hérault département.This industrial center with an important trade in wines is located on a small bluff above the river Orb about 10 km from the Mediterranean Sea. Béziers was nicknamed "Little Jerusalem" during medieval times. Marked by numerous personalities such as IBN EZRA and Benjamin DE TUDELE, his influence in the country of Languedoc lasted up to the expulsion of the Jews of France in 1394. The present community numbers about 400 souls. Stones from the ancient synagogue and Jewish cemetery of Pézenas are interesting to see in the Cloister of the Cathedral St-Nazaire as is the old ghetto.
