A.  LOOKING AT MULTIPLE GRAVESTONES IN A CEMETERY

  1. Click this link: Landesarchiv-Baden-Wuerttemberg CollectionNOTE:  Many of the cemeteries listed in the Landesarchiv-Baden-Wuerttemberg Collection are listed under different names than in this database.  For instance, here, the entry for FREISTETT reads, "Incorporated in RHEINAU", since Freistett has been absorbed into the larger entity of Rheinau.  However, the cemetery is in fact listed in the Landesarchiv under the older name, FREISTETT.  If you do not find the city or town you seek under the newer name in the Landesarchiv, try the older name.

  2. Clicking on “Strukturansicht” on the left side of the page will bring up a list of cities and towns in Baden-Wuerttemberg. Using the vertical slider, you can scroll through the list to find the desired location.

  3. When you have found the city/town of interest to you, clicking on the + sign to the left of the placename will bring up a list of folders, each containing information on 20 graves. Clicking on any one of these will in turn bring up, on the right, a list of the gravestones in that group. You can scroll through this list to see all the gravestones in the group.

  4. When you want to see a photograph of a particular gravestone, click on the word “Archivalieneinhelten” under the information listing. That brings up the information abouot the specific gravestone you selected, and scrolling down takes you to photographs of the stone.

  5. Click on the photograph to see a larger image of the stone. Above the photo are links to:

    1. zoom in (Zoom)

    2. select a part of the picture for enlarging (Ausschnitt: once you've clicked on that word, then clicking on the photograph brings up a red square with which you select a part of the photographfor enlarging in the box to the right of it.

    3. rotate (Drehen) the photograph.

    4. lighten the photograph (Helligkeit): the default value is (1). Choosing a higher number will make the photograph lighter, and in some cases will make it easier to read the engraving on the gravestone. Choosing a lower number than (1) will darken the photograph.

B. SEARCHING FOR A GRAVESTONE WHEN YOU HAVE THE LAST, OR LAST AND FIRST NAMES

  1. Click this link: Landesarchiv-Baden-Wuerttemberg Collection.

  2. Clicking on “Volltextsuche” on the left side of the page will take you to the search page.  (You may have to click it twice or more to get the search page to come up.)

  3. Enter the name(s) in the block marked “Suchtext”.

  4. In the third block, labelled “Verknüpfung”, click the arrow at the end of the block, and select “Jeder Begriff muß gefunden werden (UND). That means that both names must be found in order for the entry to be selected. If you wish to search on just a last name, then do not change that block.  Then click the box marked "Suche".  DO NOT HIT <ENTER>!

  5. When you have found the desired listing, click on “Strukturansicht” at the bottom of the lising.

  6. When the listing shows up again, click on the word “Archivalieneinhelten” under the listing. That brings up the information about the specific gravestone you selected, and scrolling down takes you to photographs of the stone.

  7. Click on the photograph to see a larger image of the stone. Above the photo are links to:

    1. zoom in (Zoom)
